Megatron Data Systems is working on providing High
Speed Wireless Internet Service to the town of Colrain.
To do this we must first access whether or not we can
even achieve this goal. The project is divided into 2
phases. The progress of each of these phases is tracked
on a separate web page. The phases involved are listed
below.
Please note that wireless is currently available within
a 300-400 meter area surrounding our business location
at 6 Jacksonville Rd. Expanding this coverage is what
this project is all about.
We are currently in Phase 1 of the project.

service.
All proceeds from the computer repair portion of our
business will go toward funding this project.
So you can help us out there as well. When your computer
needs service, bring it here. We will use the money for
this project. Send your friends to us for their computer
repair needs as well. We have over 20 years experience
building and repairing computers.
We also build custom computers too. If you need a new
computer, we can build you one. Not much of a profit on
those, but we will use any funds earned there as well
for this project.
Phase 1 - Planning - Click here for current
Phase 1 status. Updated on September 13'th 2006
This phase involves mapping out the town of Colrain
looking for the best locations in which to place
wireless antennas to distribute the wireless internet
signal to as many residents as possible.
During this phase we will also be informing residents
of the town of the project. Getting feedback as far as
interest and mapping the locations of those interested.
Wireless is already available within a 400 meter
range of our business location. Expansion beyond this
point will depend on the number of people interested and
where they are located.
We would like to blanket the entire town, but to do
so will require we meet certain minimums in each
coverage area. A coverage area is an area sounding an
antenna location 1 mile maximum in each direction as
long as there is no elevation point higher than the
antenna location. 400 meter areas are in a complete
circle like the one surrounding us and is done with a
simple omni directional antenna. The 1 mile range can
only be achieved with special directional panel
antennas, and will require one for each 1/8 pie section
of a circle. A total of 8 of these will be required to
cover a complete circle. Which we will only do if homes
requesting wireless fall within one of these sections.
This is due to the expense of putting up one of these
antennas.
Each branch out will require a minimum of 30 people
willing to commit to purchasing the service within the 1
mile radius around the covering access point.
Phase 2 - Implementation - This phase has not
yet been started.
This phase involves installing all of the necessary
equipment to distribute wireless to the target
locations. Once this phase is complete, people will then
be able to place their orders for wireless service.
Implementation will only begin in an area when we reach
our requirement of 30 people requesting wireless in that
area.
This phase has to do with branching out beyond our
current coverage location. Those right near us can
already get this service.
This phase will most likely take the most time to
complete.
Customers of ours in the Colrain area will receive
email notification from us within the next week.
Any Colrain residents interested in this project
please contact us and let us know. Call us at 624-3002,
or email us at
customerservice@mtdata.net. Provide your name, address, and
phone number so we can add it to our mapping
information.
You may also join in the discussion area in our
support forums in the Colrain Wireless Project Section.
This is where you can ask any questions about the
service.
Remember, we have to meet a minimum to justify the
expense of setting up a wireless location. So if your
seriously interested in getting it, than tell your
neighbors. The more people in your area interested, the
better the chance you will have it.
NOTE: Distance of the coverage areas is not 100%
certain at this time. Megatron will be conducting tests
during phase 1 planning to get more accurate numbers on
coverage distances. After this testing is completed the
coverage areas in all documents will be updated.
